February 28, 1998: I placed the order for my 1973 Omega on November 28, 1972, the first production year for the Oldsmobile compact series. My two-door coupe, model B27, was the most popular model of the three produced with a total production run of 26,126. The body is emerald green with a green vinyl roof, black "wetlook" vinyl interior, 350 rocket, TH-350, bucket seats, sport III wheels and power steering and brakes. The original intent was to use it as my everyday driver and when the time came, trade it in on something else. One thing lead to another and here we are twenty-four years and eighty thousand miles later and she look as good as the day I picked her up at the dealership. I personalized the car in 1977 with the addition of "flip flop" paint on the body sides and hood and a mural on the trunk deck. Other modifications include a Holley replacement carb, GM HEI ignition, dual exhaust, and Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. |
I brought the car out of storage in May of 1996, the first time it had seen the light of day for almost ten years. Several weeks of heavy cleaning, fresh oil and fuel, four new B.F. Goodrich Radial T/As, new brakes and wheel cylinders on all four corners, and we were back on the road again, at least for a couple of weeks. Some minor problems cropped up. Once I resolved them, I made it to my first cruise: the tenth annual "Back to the 50's" event held in New Castle, Pennsylvania in July. The car performed flawlessly throughout the '96 cruise season and is now hibernating for the winter.
My son was the one who encouraged me to bring the Omega back to life. He purchased a 1986 Cutlass 442 several years ago and grew weary of me asking to borrow it to "cruise in." He insisted I resurrect my vehicle and leave his alone.
Circumstances permitting, I hope to add at least one more Olds to my collection. In the meantime I'm enjoying getting reacquainted with the hobby and the great people in it.
